lyrics

I’m a pastor in the town of Springvale Maine of a little church on Main Street, and it’s a Sunday night as I’m sitting on my back porch thinking about the sermon I gave today and how it went over everyone’s heads. As I sit back here, I’m smoking a pack of cigarettes, but nobody in that little church knows I smoke these cigarettes, and it’s a good thing they don’t. My wife doesn’t like it much either.

Do you know the way?
Do you know the way?
I will wait for you
Through these storms
Through these shadows
You will find peace

I hear a knock at my door and Charlie is standing there. Now, Charlie, he’s a town cop, and we used to be good friends back in high school. We’d smoke these same cigarettes and drink six-packs of Coors Light behind the General Store and cause all sorts of trouble. But I can tell something is wrong, because Charlie is white as a ghost, and Charlie is never afraid.

Do you know the way?
Do you know the way?
I will wait for you
Through these storms
Through these shadows
You will find peace

And he says, “Hey Pastor it’s been a long time. Now, I know you know the McFadden family that lives down on Maple Street. Well, their son Jimmy got himself into a wreck tonight, and he didn’t make it, and I’ve got to be the one to go and tell his family that. I just can’t do that by myself. Will you come with me pastor?

Do you know the way?
Do you know the way?
I will wait for you
Through these storms
Through these shadows
You will find peace
